Essential Job DutiesThe Horticultural Science Summer Institute Counselors are the primary caregivers for the program campers. The Counselor is responsible for supervising and guiding campers in their personal growth and daily living skills.1 - Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers in their dorms, within activities and throughout the camp in order to meet the intended camper outcomes.
- Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication and relationship development
- Assure campers are properly supervised at all times
- Be aware of an implement safety guidelines
- Provide the daily care of each camper within your supervision including recognition of personal health needs.
- Ensure that campers receive their medications as directed by program coordinator.
- Be alert to campers and staff needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems, and discuss with program coordinator when appropriate
- Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure utilization, proper care, and maintenance is adhered to; report repairs as needed promptly to program coordinator
- Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures
- Set a good example to campers and others in regard to general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship

- Must have knowledge and experience in the discipline related to the area of assignment (horticulture, agronomy, soils, ag education, education).
- Must have experience teaching youth, as well as the ability to communicate and provide necessary instruction to campers.
- Applicants must be wiling to work irregular and late hours and live in dorm environment.
- Have at least 2 years working with youth using positive youth development principles
- At least 2 years with coursework or experience in the field of horticulture
- Should understand the development needs of youth
- Ability to relate to youth and adults in a positive manner and demonstrate knowledge and skill in program areas
- Should have the ability to observe both camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures
- Ability to apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
