Introduction The Department of Health Services (DHS), Division of Public Health (DPH) is recruiting for a Cancer Epidemiologist within the Office of Health Informatics (OHI). This position offers the option to work remotely up to 4 days per week and is headquartered in the 201 E. Washington Ave. office in downtown Madison. Position Summary As the Cancer Epidemiologist, you will apply expert knowledge of population-based cancer data and research methods, complex data analysis, and public health objectives to the Wisconsin Cancer Reporting System (WCRS), a public health surveillance tool. This position will lead in the development of scientific measures and reports in the areas of cancer burden and health disparities and inequities. Responsibilities include:

  • Representing the Wisconsin cancer registry within the state and nationally.
  • Monitoring and directing the work of WCRS data collection for adherence to National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR) requirements.
  • Contributing to the annual grant application to CDC.
  • Developing and writing scientific reports using WCRS and other cancer-related data.
  • Providing consultation to other DHS epidemiologists, research scientists, and others on cancer statistics and analyses.
  • Providing expertise on projects that cross divisions.
  • Collaborating on activities, programs, policies, and publications in these areas with internal and external partners.

Salary Information The starting pay is between $41.00 to $45.00 per hour (approximately $85,200 to $93,600 per year), depending on qualifications, plus excellent benefits. A 12-month probationary period is required. Pay for current or former state employees will be set based on the rules that apply to compensation for the applicable transaction. This position is classified as an Epidemiologist – Advanced and is in pay schedule and range 11/03. Qualifications

Minimally qualified applicants will have all of the following:

  • Experience with public health epidemiology and program evaluation.
  • Experience using databases and statistical software packages (e.g., MS Excel, MS Access, SAS, Arc-GIS, Tableau, etc.) to collect, manage, analyze, visualize, or interpret data, as well as to assess data quality.
  • Experience developing and writing scientific reports on health disparities and inequities using health-related data.

Well-qualified applicants will also have one or more of the following:

  • Experience with public health epidemiology or program evaluation related to population-based cancer data and research.
  • Experience designing and conducting analyses of cancer data sets using SEER*Stat or other cancer statistical software packages.
  • Experience using statistical methods to analyze cancer data (e.g., relative survival, period survival, regression analysis of trends, limited duration prevalence, etc.).
