Adult Mental Health Support Services Counselor (QMHP/T)

Annual Salary: $48,317

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm

About the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board

Since 1971, HNNCSB has provided high-quality behavioral health services to residents of Hampton and Newport News. We offer a wide range of programs for children and adults living with mental illness, developmental disabilities, and/or substance use disorders.

The Mental Health Regional Supervised Housing Program supports adults living with severe mental illness, including those with co-occurring substance use disorders, by providing a safe and structured living environment that maximizes independence and reduces hospital admissions. Staff work closely with individuals to engage them in psychiatric and substance use treatment, assist with benefits and applications, and connect them to vocational, educational, and psychosocial programs. Priority is given to adults from Region V who are ready for discharge from Eastern State Hospital or whose needs can safely be met in the community.

Position Overview As an Adult Mental Health Support Services Counselor, you will assess client needs, develop individualized service plans, and provide direct support in residential and community settings. Your work will support client recovery, promote independence, and ensure safety while maintaining the highest quality of mental health services. Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Services (e.g., Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or related field)

  • Minimum one (1) year of experience providing behavioral health services to adults living with serious mental illness or emotional impairments

  • Must be registered with the Virginia Board of Counseling as a QMHP or obtain QMHP-Trainee status within 30 days of employment

  • Valid Virginia Driver's License

  • Strong communication, empathy, and problem-solving skills
