California State University, Fresno is seeking an extraordinary woodwind/brass professor who is committed to providing an education that will transform the lives of our highly diverse and talented students in our continuously growing department. The successful candidate will be expected to sustain and expand their instrumental studio (flute, clarinet, oboe, trombone, or trumpet) as well as teach courses in one of the following areas: music history, music theory/ear training, or ethnomusicology dependent upon their secondary area of expertise. Other classes will be assigned as required by the department.
Position responsibilities include: (1) Overseeing the woodwind/brass studio, including accreditation with NASM and student advising; (2) Teaching undergraduate and graduate applied woodwind/brass lessons; supervising student preparation for performances, recitals, and research projects; (3) Teaching courses in undergraduate and graduate wind literature and other area-specific offerings (4) Teaching music history, music theory/ear training, ethnomusicology, and/or other courses as required by the department (5) Giving solo performances, performing with faculty colleagues and guest musicians; (6) Engaging in scholarly and/or applied research in the field of woodwind/brass performance/pedagogy; (7) Recruiting students into their studio through various recruitment activities that will include visits to K-12/college programs and establishing positive relationships with local/regional educators. (8) Actively supporting Fresno State department of music, College of Arts and Humanities and Fresno State University through providing academic support, committee work, community service, grant writing and/or other leadership activities. (9) Active involvement in regional, state, and/or national professional music organizations.
The typical workload is 15 weighted teaching units (WTUs) per semester, generally comprising 12 WTUs of instruction and 3 WTUs of non-instructional responsibilities. Outcomes assessment and service learning are important components of the university curriculum. Teaching responsibilities will be assigned based on the candidate's expertise and the department's needs. Specific assignments are dependent on departmental needs and the background of the individual. In the first two years, new tenure track faculty receive a reduced teaching load to allow new faculty start-up time for teaching, research, and other professional development efforts. Our Department: The Department of Music was one of the original departments when the university was founded in 1911 and continues to be a leader in music education and artistic performance in the Central Valley and the state at large. Fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, our department is a comprehensive unit in the College of the Arts and Humanities and offers undergraduate and master's degrees in classical and jazz performance; as well as music education, conducting, and composition.
Our department serves approximately 300 undergraduate and graduate students, with 22 full-time and 18 part-time faculty. We schedule over 150 performances a year that include landmark symphonic and choral works, operas, festivals, and master classes. We offer over $300,000 annually in student scholarships and enjoy access to one of the largest music library collections in the country.

Qualifications: * Required Education (from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent.): an earned doctorate in flute, clarinet, oboe, trombone or trumpet (DMA, Ph.D., or equivalent).
Required Experience: * Evidence of working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Active as an accomplished professional player with demonstrable career and expertise as a soloist and collaborator that may include international, national, regional, and community engagement and/or collaboration.
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching flute, clarinet, oboe, trombone, or trumpet at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels.
- Evidence of successful student recruitment (college program, private studio, etc.)
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching music history, music theory/ear training, or ethnomusicology at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels.
- A well-articulated agenda for research, scholarship, and creative activity.
- Excellent writing, communication, and leadership skills.
- A record of active participation, presentation/performance, or a leadership position in local, regional, state, national, and/or international music organizations.
- At least two years of experience teaching studio flute, clarinet, oboe, trombone, or trumpet at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels as the teacher of record for the course.
- Curriculum vitae (include a list of all classes taught at all institutions).
- Statement addressing your commitment to working with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds (that is, a diversity statement).
