Department Summary
The UNT Dallas Learning Commons offers tutorial assistance in writing and STEM to students who need supplemental academic support. The Work Study Student Assistant serves as an important team member in the Learning Commons. He/she works under the supervision of the administrative staff and serves as the first point of contact for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The Work Study Student Assistant also performs some clerical work and assists the professional staff with various projects.
Position Summary
The Work Study Student Assistant should:
- Greet students and serve as the first point of contact for the Learning Commons.
- Answer phone calls and respond to Learning Commons emails.
- Interpret and clarify Learning Commons procedures to students and visitors, and lead classroom presentations to advertise Learning Commons services.
- Assist students in scheduling appointments for the Learning Commons and teach them how to schedule appointments through our online scheduling website.
- Direct the daily in-and-out flow of students in the Learning Commons; check students in for tutoring and encourage students to complete a survey after their session.
- Refer students to Learning Commons resources and other academic services and departments as needed.
- Assist administrative staff with inventory management and other clerical work.
- Assist administrative staff and professional tutors with special assignments, projects, and events.
- Assist in preparing resources and marketing materials for the Learning Commons including handouts, workshops, flyers, website content, social media posts, videos, etc.
- Keep tutoring areas clean, organized, and decorated.
- Work the assigned hours per week unless making prior arrangements with supervisor.
- Attend and complete mandatory trainings.
- Must qualify as work-study eligible.
- Must be a currently enrolled University of North Texas at Dallas student making satisfactory progress toward completion of a degree program.
- Excellent customer service skills, as well as effective oral and written communication skills.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office computer applications (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Some knowledge of office practices and procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions accurately.
- Good interpersonal skills and ease in relating to people from varying educational, cultural and social backgrounds.
- Responsible, reliable and punctual.
- Ability to learn assigned tasks readily, to adhere to prescribed routines, and to develop some skill in the operation of common office equipment.
- Ability to work 12-19 hours per week
- Knowledge of (or ability to rapidly assimilate and retain) University academic policy, procedure, and practices
- Knowledge of FERPA preferred but not required
- Ability to work under considerable pressure, to adjust to constant changes, to handle multiple tasks, and work with all kinds of students
- Strong ability to work independently and make decisions within the framework of broad goals and objectives
