Job description: The Office of Curriculum in the School of Medicine at the University of Virginia seeks a Lab Manager to oversee the Gross Anatomy Lab and Surgical Skills Training Center (SSTC). This position is responsible for managing a small team of staff and ensuring that labs are adequately staffed, required supplies and training materials are available, and that fiscal processes (e.g., purchasing, account certifications, etc.) are completed accurately and on time. The successful candidate must be comfortable working with human anatomical donors (cadavers).
The Surgical Skills Training Center (SSTC) supports medical students, residents, and fellows in medical simulation exercises using human anatomical donors. Anatomy is a required course for all first-year medical students. During our anatomy lab classes, medical students learn about the structure of the human body on anatomical donors. Job Responsibilities:
- Plan, lead, and evaluate the work of lab staff.
- Manage the procurement of cadavers, lab equipment and supplies, anatomical models, etc. and complete associated budgetary processes (e.g., expense reports, purchase orders, monthly account certifications, provide annual budget recommendations based on trends, explain budget variances, etc.).
- Responsible for the operation, routine maintenance, repair, monitoring, and cleaning of all equipment, computers, and supplies, to ensure the smooth operation of the Gross Anatomy program. Ensure computers and anatomical software (VH Dissector and Complete Anatomy) are functioning properly.
- Work with Director and other faculty to schedule, organize, setup, and clean-up teaching sessions and labs (includes assisting during scheduled dissection labs, preparation of pro-sections, practical exam setup and proctoring, and maintaining the specimen storage room to ensure cleanliness and safety). Ensure lab users follow the UVA SOM Gross Anatomy Laboratory Policies and Rules.
- Frequent contact with regulatory boards and/or governmental entities (e.g., Virginia State Anatomical Program) regarding standards, quality assurance, and lab procedures.
- Frequent contact with internal departments (e.g., MedEd Tech, iLAB, Environmental Health and Safety, Facilities Management, etc.) regarding administrative matters and with external stakeholders (e.g., vendors, lab participants) concerning equipment and supplies.
- Frequent contact with students, residents, fellows, faculty, and staff to provide information, consultation, or direction concerning laboratory operations.
- May teach and/or serve as a technical expert.
- Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist Training Program OR an LPN program OR graduate of an equivalent military training program
- Experience working with cadavers. Experience with iLAB and/or revenue generating activities.
- Certified to practice as a Surgical Technologist by NBSTSA (The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting) or NCCT (The National Center for Competency Testing). American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS certification.
