Job title: Gross Anatomy and Surgical Skills Lab Manager Company: University of Virginia Job description: The Office of Curriculum in the School of Medicine at the University of Virginia seeks a Lab Manager to oversee the Gross Anatomy Lab and Surgical Skills Training Center (SSTC). This position is responsible for managing a small team of staff and ensuring that labs are adequately staffed, required supplies and training materials are available, and that fiscal processes (e.g., purchasing, account certifications, etc.) are completed accurately and on time. The successful candidate must be comfortable working with human anatomical donors (cadavers). The Surgical Skills Training Center (SSTC) supports medical students, residents, and fellows in medical simulation exercises using human anatomical donors. Anatomy is a required course for all first-year medical students. During our anatomy lab classes, medical students learn about the structure of the human body on anatomical donors. This class is an important foundation for our students in their learning of clinical procedures to treat sick patients. Learn more about the Anatomy Curriculum at Job Responsibilities:

• Plan, lead, and evaluate the work of lab staff.
• Manage the procurement of cadavers, lab equipment and supplies, anatomical models, etc. and complete associated budgetary processes (e.g., expense reports, purchase orders, monthly account certifications, provide annual budget recommendations based on trends, explain budget variances, etc.).
• Responsible for the operation, routine maintenance, repair, monitoring, and cleaning of all equipment, computers, and supplies, to ensure the smooth operation of the Gross Anatomy program. Ensure computers and anatomical software (VH Dissector and Complete Anatomy) are functioning properly.
• Work with Director and other faculty to schedule, organize, setup, and clean-up teaching sessions and labs (includes assisting during scheduled dissection labs, preparation of pro-sections, practical exam setup and proctoring, and maintaining the specimen storage room to ensure cleanliness and safety). Ensure lab users follow the UVA SOM Gross Anatomy Laboratory Policies and Rules.
• Frequent contact with regulatory boards and/or governmental entities (e.g., Virginia State Anatomical Program) regarding standards, quality assurance, and lab procedures.
• Frequent contact with internal departments (e.g., MedEd Tech, iLAB, Environmental Health and Safety, Facilities Management, etc.) regarding administrative matters and with external stakeholders (e.g., vendors, lab participants) concerning equipment and supplies.
• Frequent contact with students, residents, fellows, faculty, and staff to provide information, consultation, or direction concerning laboratory operations.
• May teach and/or serve as a technical expert.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Education: Master's degree. Bachelor's degree accepted with additional experience. Experience: Master's degree: Four years of experience in lab technical and supervisory role. Bachelor's Degree: Six years of experience in lab technical and/or supervisory role. Licensure: Medical Laboratory Technician certification preferred. Certain areas may require certification to be obtained through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). Preferred Qualifications:

• Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist Training Program OR an LPN program OR graduate of an equivalent military training program
• Experience working with cadavers. Experience with iLAB and/or revenue generating activities.
• Certified to practice as a Surgical Technologist by NBSTSA (The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting) or NCCT (The National Center for Competency Testing). American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS certification.
• Highly organized, attentive to detail, self-motivated, able to work independently, capable of motivating and rewarding others, and demonstrates a willingness to learn.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation. Frequent bending, reaching (overhead), and repetitive motion is expected. Ability to push/pull 50-100lbs. May be exposed to noise, radiation, radioactive materials, blood/body fluids, and infectious disease. Anticipated hiring range: $70,000 - $80,000, commensurate with education and experience. This fully on-site position is exempt level, full-time with benefits.
