Job description: This position primarily focuses on teaching lab excellence in a selected science (Biology or Chemistry) with emphasis on applications to biology and the health professional majors. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate laboratory teaching, impactful service to the College community, and mentoring of undergraduate students. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience with innovative lab/classroom approaches for promoting student success such as: project-based learning (PBL) experiences, curriculum development, encouraging classroom inclusivity, and high-impact pedagogical approaches. Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities:
- Teach multiple laboratory sections per year of assigned laboratory courses in accordance with course descriptions and/or learning outcomes, the course syllabus, and institutional policies and procedures.
- Participate in the review of curricula and selection of instructional materials within the discipline or department (individually or collaboratively) including implementing new equipment, designing and implementing new lab activities, and helping to coordinate the lab curriculum with the lecture course.
- Evaluate and assess student learning on a regular basis in all classes taught.
- Advise students on their performance and areas they need to improve.
- Ensure labs are equipped with all necessary supplies and materials to ensure safe and compliant use of the labs.
- Perform all necessary duties of the lab instructor including grading, attendance tracking and reporting, attending training sessions and teaching workshops, submitting academic updates for students, collecting assessment data as required and meeting with students outside of class.
- Work with the teaching assistants and Lab managers to ensure efficient set up and clean-up of laboratories after each session.
- Participate in assessment activities at course, department, and college levels to assist students in achieving designated course objectives or learning outcomes.
- Use appropriate technologies to enhance classroom or online instruction and to achieve established course objectives or learning outcomes.
- Regularly evaluate teaching methods and use data to continually improve instructional strategies.
- Serve on departmental, school, and/or college committees.
- Discuss program, career, or transfer options and other college services with students to support informed academic decisions.
- Attend required assembly/convocation and commencement/graduation ceremonies.
- Maintain knowledge and competence in the appropriate academic discipline or workforce field
- Ability to complete other duties as assigned
- One year experience teaching laboratory course(s) in the relevant subject area
- A commitment to and experience in teaching laboratory courses in content area within a diverse undergraduate student environment
- A strong, demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate laboratory teaching and mentoring of undergraduate students
- Experience in integrating innovative approaches to promoting student success and developing an inclusive community in the classroom/lab
- Strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills
- Experience working collaboratively with faculty from a wide range of disciplines, cultures and academic backgrounds
- Strong computer skills

- Ability to actively participate in department, school, college meetings
- Previous experience with Learning Management Systems (LMS), particularly with BlackBoard and teleconferencing software, particularly Zoom and BlackBoard Collaborate preferred.
- Minimum of a master's degree in content area taught (Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology)
- Ability to teach at the Dobbs Ferry and Bronx campuses as needed
- Must be able to push, pull, move or lift up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to meet all general health requirements for the position as per college policies
