About the Department
The mission of the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) & NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH) is to enhance animal and human health and well-being through the education and advanced training of veterinarians and provide leadership in veterinary care and outreach through interdisciplinary partnerships.
The Teaching Animal Unit (TAU) is a dynamic teaching institution for veterinary students in all four years of the veterinary curriculum that includes experiences with swine, poultry, sheep, goats, and beef/dairy cattle. The purpose of the TAU is to provide realistic opportunities for veterinary students education that is centered around food animals. This live animal farming enterprise strives to function in a manner compatible with a financially viable agricultural enterprise by emphasizing current best management practices for an environmentally enriched, animal welfare friendly operation. This student exposure is accomplished annually by providing live animal educational training for seven senior 2-week clinical rotations, six 1-week selectives and in excess of 150 teaching laboratories (currently comprising 100 students per class at 25 students per lab) and 4th year clinical rotations as needed.
Essential Job Duties
The farm animal technician supports the mission of the Teaching Animal Unit (TAU) by assisting with general daily farm operations, animal care and coordinating cadaver procurement for VMP labs. All duties will include adherence to SOPs, record keeping, and assuring animal welfare.
This position will be cross-trained to work with swine, dairy cattle, beef cattle, and small ruminants animal care duties to be lead for student workers on weekend shifts.
Duties:
- Help ensure regulatory compliance in all areas of responsibility and understand responsibilities as outlined by all regulatory entities (IACUC, AAALAC, USDA, OLAW).
- Carry out farm operations including equipment used onsite and ability to drive a truck with trailer to move animals as needed
- Be a lead to student workers
- Assist with the setup and break down of all teaching labs and selectives using CVM animals.
- In-depth working knowledge of animals housed onsite and regulatory guidelines for animal use and welfare.
- Ability to safely operate farm equipment.

- Extensive experience working directly with food animal related species and associated daily farm operations.
