UW Information Technology (UW-IT) is the central information technology organization for the University of Washington, responsible for strategic planning, oversight, and direction of the UW's IT infrastructure, resources, and services. UW-IT provides critical technology support to all three campuses, UW medical centers, and research operations around the world. The UW-IT Infrastructure (ITI) division of UW-IT delivers the technology infrastructure required to sustain UW as a leading research, teaching, learning, and medical institution. These technologies support the UW's core mission at all levels: research, teaching, learning, healthcare, and the necessary underlying administrative and operational functions required to deliver these services. The Director of Computing and Storage is the Business Service Manager responsible for overseeing the development, maintenance, direction and decisions around UW-IT's missions for Computing and Storage. Areas of responsibility for this position include:

• Working with strategic research programs across the University and other campus partners

• Developing approaches for building computing and storage capacity and long-term strategic planning

• Partnering with Service Team Leadership, Technology Managers, and Project Managers to ensure appropriate resourcing prioritization

• Making budgetary decisions within an ever-changing environment

• Developing a strategy and roadmap for the future while considering new technologies within computing and storage

• Having delegated budget authority and planning for infrastructure purchases and maintenance.

This position is also responsible for working with the service teams to make recommendations for managing and developing technical staff within UW-IT Infrastructure (ITI), including supervision, technology needs assessment, technology skills planning and development, technical resource allocation among projects and services, team building, professional development, and organizational development. This position will work closely with the ITI AVP/CTO, Directors, Technology Managers, Project Managers, Service Owners, and Service Managers to ensure that all projects and services are optimally staffed for achieving technology project and service goals, while also encouraging the professional development of employees. This includes the facilitation of moving people to new services or projects for alignment towards strategic goals, furthering their professional development, and bringing new perspectives to an effort. Position Complexities: The Computing and Storage Director is part of the Infrastructure division leadership team and will participate in planned and future strategic planning efforts. This position builds productive working relationships with staff from all levels of IT Infrastructure and invests in supporting career development for staff. This position manages highly technical Service Owners, Principal Architects, and a Technology Manager, who in turn manages the systems & software engineers supporting the universities most crucial technologies. This position manages subject matter experts who execute complex supplier contracts, and works in concert with the Strategy & Business Operations (SBO) division to ensure that contracts are executed in accordance with SBO established practices. This position also liaises with other UW-IT divisions to align and implement emerging best practices related to workforce development, HR policies, etc. REQUIREMENTS:

• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Science, or Business or discipline-related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Six years of progressively responsible experience in information technology systems engineering, management, or operations.

• Experience managing information technology resources in a complex technical and political landscape with a large heterogeneous distributed computing environment.

• Demonstrated ability to develop and execute multi-year strategic and operational plans.

• Experience leading organizational change in coordination with implementing technical improvements.

• Experience applying business frameworks and philosophies for building a cohesive and effective team that resulted in overall organizational health and function

• Ability to negotiate with and provide consultation to executive leadership, support teams, project managers, service owners/managers, business analysts, and other technical staff.

• Ability to lead a diverse technical team.

• Proven track record of mentoring and advancing staff development and career growth and succession planning.

• Demonstrated ability to set and meet goals, assess resource needs, allocate staff, and communicate status.

• Ability to quickly find common ground and resolve any project or service challenges that arise; is seen as a collaborator and team player; easily secures trust and support of peers and staff.

• High degree of emotional intelligence (self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, agility, adaptability, and persuasiveness).

• Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and apply new technologies, methodologies, tools, etc

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOLYMENT Working conditions include typical office environments; may be open environments. This is a hybrid position with some degree of onsite availability required. This is an essential position and is required to report to work remotely when UW suspends operations. This position involves responsibilities and occasional situations where work outside of standard business hours is required to respond to incidents or to meet critical deadlines. May travel on occasion for training and conferences.
