UW Information Technology (UW-IT) is the central information technology organization for the University of Washington, responsible for strategic planning, oversight, and direction of the UW's IT infrastructure, resources, and services. UW-IT provides critical technology support to all three campuses, UW medical centers, and research operations around the world. UW-IT partners with the UW community to enable innovation, learning, discovery, and service.
The UW-IT Infrastructure (ITI) division of UW-IT delivers the technology infrastructure required to sustain UW as a leading research, teaching, learning, and medical institution. These technologies support the UW's core mission at all levels: research, teaching, learning, healthcare, and the necessary underlying administrative and operational functions required to deliver these services.
The Director of Computing and Storage is the Business Service Manager responsible for overseeing the development, maintenance, direction and decisions around UW-IT's missions for Computing and Storage.
Areas of responsibility for this position include:
- Working with strategic research programs across the University and other campus partners
- Developing approaches for building computing and storage capacity and long-term strategic planning
- Partnering with Service Team Leadership, Technology Managers, and Project Managers to ensure appropriate resourcing prioritization
- Making budgetary decisions within an ever-changing environment
- Developing a strategy and roadmap for the future while considering new technologies within computing and storage
- Having delegated budget authority and planning for infrastructure purchases and maintenance.
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Science, or Business or discipline-related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Six years of progressively responsible experience in information technology systems engineering, management, or operations.
- Experience managing information technology resources in a complex technical and political landscape with a large heterogeneous distributed computing environment.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and execute multi-year strategic and operational plans.
- Experience leading organizational change in coordination with implementing technical improvements.
- Experience applying business frameworks and philosophies for building a cohesive and effective team that resulted in overall organizational health and function
- Ability to negotiate with and provide consultation to executive leadership, support teams, project managers, service owners/managers, business analysts, and other technical staff.
- Ability to lead a diverse technical team.
- Proven track record of mentoring and advancing staff development and career growth and succession planning.
- Demonstrated ability to set and meet goals, assess resource needs, allocate staff, and communicate status.
- Ability to quickly find common ground and resolve any project or service challenges that arise; is seen as a collaborator and team player; easily secures trust and support of peers and staff.
- High degree of emotional intelligence (self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, agility, adaptability, and persuasiveness).
- Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and apply new technologies, methodologies, tools, etc
- Excellent oral and written communications skills; committed to provide excellent customer service; skilled at personal interaction abilities.
- Experience in a research university or other academic institution.
- Knowledge of project management "best practices", group dynamics, team building and facilitation skills
- Experience with ITIL framework, roles and ITSM practices.
- Experience in hiring technical staff.
