Technical Writer (Part Time)

Overview:

FWI is building a team to plan, coordinate, and host ten regional pedestrian safety summits across all NHTSA regions nationwide. As a Technical Writer, you will prepare clear and concise reports on each of the ten summits and a final report summarizing outcomes, evaluation measures, and next steps.

Work Schedule and Location

Remote: This part-time remote position requires approximately 3 hours per week, with a flexible schedule coordinated around project milestones, monthly reporting deadlines, and deliverable timelines. 

Responsibilities:
  • Author clear, well-organized reports for each of the ten regional summits, capturing outcomes, key takeaways, resources shared, and evaluation results
  • Develop a comprehensive final project report that synthesizes findings, evaluation data, and next steps from all ten summits into a cohesive document
  • Translate complex pedestrian safety data and research into materials that are accessible and actionable for a broad audience
  • Create content across multiple formats, including printed reports, publications, web-ready materials, and other communications
  • Apply plain language principles throughout all written deliverables, using everyday words, active voice, short sentences, and clean formatting
  • Contribute to monthly progress reports and other project documentation as needed
  • Collaborate with the Technical Editor and project team to incorporate feedback and refine deliverables through the review process
  • Ensure electronic documents meet Section 508 accessibility standards when identified by NHTSA as requiring compliance
  • Develop instructional and reference materials on technical topics related to pedestrian safety as needed
Qualifications:

Required: 

  • Bachelor's degree and at least 4 years of relevant experience.  
  • Education/Experience Substitution: PhD and 0 years experience; Master's and 2 years experience; Associate's and 6 years experience; High School and 8 years experience
  • Expertise in communicating technical material through multiple media and applications including printed documents, web pages, and digital communications

Desired:

  • Experience writing about traffic safety topics, particularly pedestrian safety, vulnerable road users, or transportation research
  • Background in developing research reports, evaluation findings, or publications for a government or public safety audience
  • Familiarity with plain language standards and Section 508 accessibility requirements for federal documents
  • Experience with data-driven content, including translating evaluation results and research findings into clear, actionable reports
  • Previous experience supporting a similar Government agency or large-scale corporate environment
