This person is responsible for instructing youth and adults in tennis skills and drills and leading the participants, as well as providing praise and constructive criticism. Sports/Program Instructors – Tennis should have a basic working knowledge of the fundamental skills of tennis and are extremely confident and skilled at creating, composing, and delivering youth and adult lesson plans for all classes that are age appropriate and effective in participant learning, understanding, and growth in the sport of tennis. RELATIONSHIPS:Reports to: Recreation ProgrammerHas regular work contact with Department, Division, and Office Heads, City employees, program participants, parents/guardians, program spectators, and the general public.Supervises: None ESSENTIAL DUTIES:To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. - Instructs beginner through advanced level tennis to youth and adults.
- Creates, composes, develops and provides daily lesson plans for all classes that are age appropriate while coaching children and adults through skill and drill stations and various games.
- Explains and demonstrates tennis skills and techniques to each youth and adult lesson group.
- Prepares courts for activity, ensures area is free of hazards, and cleans up area at conclusion of play.
- Sets up and cleans up skill and drill stations or games and equipment for each lesson.
- Maintains a high level of professionalism and customer service.
- Ensures customer satisfaction.
- Provides praise and constructive criticism to participants.
- Encourages and facilitates participant involvement.
- Creates a safe, fun, friendly environment. Supervises participants and maintains a safe learning environment.
- Maintains proper documentation of participant records and attendance, injuries, complaints and issues, and problem reports.
- Provides first aid and reacts appropriately in emergency situations.
- Communicates with participants and participants parents.
- Reports any issues to Recreation Programmer.
- Follows all safety regulations, policies, and procedures; reports all unsafe conditions and acts to supervisor; reports all accidents to the supervisor immediately whenever possible; follows recognized safe work practices.
- Performs other special projects and other job duties as assigned or required during regular and non-business hours.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- A minimum of 1 year of experience playing various sports, such as tennis, with teaching skills is required.
- A minimum of 1 year of experience working with and/or teaching and coaching youth and adults in a sport setting (tennis preferred) or other recreational programs is required.
- A minimum of 1 year of supervisory experience is required.
- Current Child and Adult CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications or willing/able to obtain.
- Access to personal or public transportation for job-related duties.
- Previous experience playing various sports, such as tennis, with teaching and coaching skills preferred.
- Previous experience with the fundamentals of the game of tennis preferred.
- Previous experience working with and/or teaching in a sport setting (tennis preferred) or other recreational programs desired.
- Thorough knowledge of the rules and fundamentals of the game of tennis.
- Thorough knowledge of the principles and skills of tennis match play.
- Organizational and time management skills to prioritize duties and accomplish a high volume of work product while adapting to constant changes in priority.
- Exceptional communication skills, both verbally and in writing, paired with a strong customer service background, and effective interpersonal skills.
- Collaboration skills to effectively work with others to achieve common goals through communication, teamwork, and problem-solving.
- Critical thinking skills to effectively analyze situations and solve complex or technical problems in a timely manner.
- Accurate record-keeping and data-reporting skills to prepare and present standard reports.
- Basic level of technical proficiency skills, including computer applications and software.
- Playing various sports, especially tennis.
- Coaching sports fundamentals and coaching tennis preferred.
- Ability to compose routine correspondence and routine reports in a clear, concise, logical, and effective manner, utilizing proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, and tone.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals, and to compute percentages.
- Ability to effectively make presentations to small and large groups of individuals, manage public-speaking obligations, and successfully communicate with the general public.
- Ability to make decisions according to applicable laws, regulations, established procedures, and the directives of the City Manager and City Council.
- Ability to follow City/Department/Division policies, work independently; react quickly,
- Possess good judgment; be dependable and able to approach a group of youth and adults.
- Ability to work afternoons, and evenings.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and within the boundaries of responsibility.
- Ability to maintain control of participants.
- Ability to physically lead and participate in program activities.
- Ability to comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures, and report all unsafe activities or conditions to Recreation Programmer.
