Sports/Program Instructor – Tennis (Seasonal)

This person is responsible for instructing youth and adults in tennis skills and drills and leading the participants, as well as providing praise and constructive criticism. Sports/Program Instructors – Tennis should have a basic working knowledge of the fundamental skills of tennis and are extremely confident and skilled at creating, composing, and delivering youth and adult lesson plans for all classes that are age appropriate and effective in participant learning, understanding, and growth in the sport of tennis. RELATIONSHIPS:Reports to:  Recreation ProgrammerHas regular work contact with Department, Division, and Office Heads, City employees, program participants, parents/guardians, program spectators, and the general public.Supervises: None  ESSENTIAL DUTIES:To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. 1. Instructs beginner through advanced level tennis to youth and adults.
2. Creates, composes, develops and provides daily lesson plans for all classes that are age appropriate while coaching children and adults through skill and drill stations and various games. 
3. Explains and demonstrates tennis skills and techniques to each youth and adult lesson group. 
4. Prepares courts for activity, ensures area is free of hazards, and cleans up area at conclusion of play.
5. Sets up and cleans up skill and drill stations or games and equipment for each lesson. 
6. Maintains a high level of professionalism and customer service.
7. Ensures customer satisfaction.
8. Provides praise and constructive criticism to participants. 
9. Encourages and facilitates participant involvement. 
10. Creates a safe, fun, friendly environment. Supervises participants and maintains a safe learning environment.
11. Maintains proper documentation of participant records and attendance, injuries, complaints and issues, and problem reports.
12. Provides first aid and reacts appropriately in emergency situations.
13. Communicates with participants and participants parents.
14. Reports any issues to Recreation Programmer.
15. Follows all safety regulations, policies, and procedures; reports all unsafe conditions and acts to supervisor; reports all accidents to the supervisor immediately whenever possible; follows recognized safe work practices.
16. Performs other special projects and other job duties as assigned or required during regular and non-business hours.

OTHER DUTIES:

Arrive at the designated site 15 minutes before game time to make sure the area is prepared for play.

Serves as a liaison between program participants and office.

Responsible for program equipment. 

Cleans up any trash in the bleachers and on the courts before leaving.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND PRIOR EXPERIENCEThe requirements listed below are not necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

1. Must be 18 years of age or older.
2. A minimum of 1 year of experience playing various sports, such as tennis, with teaching skills is required.
3. A minimum of 1 year of experience working with and/or teaching and coaching youth and adults in a sport setting (tennis preferred) or other recreational programs is required.
4. A minimum of 1 year of supervisory experience is required.
5. Current Child and Adult CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications or willing/able to obtain. 
6. Access to personal or public transportation for job-related duties.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONSThe qualifications listed below are preferred, but not required to perform the essential duties of the position. The absence of these qualifications on a candidate’s application does not preclude them from consideration.

1. Previous experience playing various sports, such as tennis, with teaching and coaching skills preferred. 
2. Previous experience with the fundamentals of the game of tennis preferred.
3. Previous experience working with and/or teaching in a sport setting (tennis preferred) or other recreational programs desired.

 EQUIPMENT, INSTRUMENTS AND MACHINES:Machinery and equipment, including tennis sports equipment and supplies, such as racquets, tennis balls (multiple kinds for all youth ages and adult), squeegees (if needing to get water off courts from rain/weather), and various other equipment to run tennis lessons.WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL FACTORS:The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in an outdoor, hands-on environment. An individual in this position is frequently involved in physical work at a fast pace, facilitating, instructing, and leading tennis match play, and physically interacting and participating with kids and adults for long periods of time, up to 6 hours (45 minutes to an hour and a half each class with 5 classes a day, twice a week). This position frequently walks, stands, stoops, kneels, bends, turns, crouches, crawls, working in narrow and/or confining spaces, and exerts up to 15 pounds of force by lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling objects, especially sport equipment cart/bag to/from storage area and courts. The employee is frequently required to see/observe all sections of an assigned area of responsibility, talk/speak, and listen/hear; use their hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects and equipment; repetitive arm, wrist, hand, and eye movements are included. There is frequent twisting and turning of waist/shoulders/legs, lying on stomach or back, reaching, semi-reach to full-reach overhead, wrist turning, and grasping. The employee may be required to climb or balance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to perform essential program support to sport activities and programs and to operate various pieces of equipment. Employee is required to use cognitive ability to reason, analyze, and verbalize thoughts and ideas. Requires the ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes, and sounds associated with job-related objects, materials, or tasks.The employee will be exposed to outside weather conditions, including extreme heat. The employee may work near moving mechanical parts in precarious places; and is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic, or caustic chemicals, and vibration. The working conditions in the outdoor environment are dirty, dusty, traverse hilly, and uneven terrain.
