Responsibilities

  • Own a high-profile beat for Artnet PRO
  • Conceive and write dynamic, deeply reported features and news stories on: Emerging art-market trends, Key dealers, advisors, collectors, and auction houses, Artists and institutions shaping market narratives
  • Pitch and develop distinctive angles that go beyond competitors
  • Break news for our Artnet PRO members with clear, accurate, and fast copy
  • Helm the weekly Wet Paint gossip column
  • Run one of the art world’s most widely read gossip columns
  • Develop exclusive scoops and behind-the-scenes stories
  • Build and maintain a network of tipsters, insiders, and contributors who trust you with sensitive information
  • Shape and sustain a strong, recognizable voice for the column: witty, informed, and fair
  • Collaborate on bigger editorial projects
  • Work with the Artnet News Pro editorial team on: Multi-part investigations, Data-driven market reports, Special editorial packages tied to major art fairs, auctions, and market events
  • Contribute ideas that connect your beat to wider art-world and business-of-culture stories
  • Help grow Wet Paint beyond the page
  • Contribute to the evolution of Wet Paint as it expands into an in-person social/events franchise
  • Bring story ideas, guest concepts, and programming suggestions that amplify the column’s voice and community

Skills

  • Reporting experience on the art market or a closely related beat
  • Four-plus years of professional experience in art-market reporting or the equivalent experience in business, culture, or entertainment journalism with a strong track record of breaking stories and cultivating sources
  • Proven art-world literacy
  • A demonstrated ability to write authoritatively about art, the art market, and the personalities and institutions that drive it
  • Comfort covering topics ranging from auction results and gallery moves to below-the-radar power dynamics and social currents
  • A deep, active source network
  • A wide-ranging network of sources—or a clear plan and demonstrated ability to build one—across galleries, auction houses, artist studios, advisors, collectors, and institutions
  • Skill in earning trust, protecting sources, and handling sensitive information with discretion
  • A flair for narrative and voice
  • You can switch between clean, reported news writing and a more playful column style
  • You know how to balance wit with fairness and accuracy, and you understand the ethical stakes of gossip and insider coverage
  • Art world presence and stamina
  • An energetic zest for the social aspects of the art world and art market: openings, fairs, dinners, and late-night conversations where stories are born
  • Comfort working on deadline while navigating busy social/industry calendars
  • All candidates must either be based in New York or be able to work effectively on Eastern Time
