About the Role: Associate Counsel

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Associate Counsel to join our team in defending lawsuits filed in Virginia courts and handling first-party insurance defense. This is a remote position based in Fairfax, VA, offering a unique opportunity to work with a talented team of legal professionals and contribute to the success of our organization. As an Associate Counsel, you will play a critical role in researching laws, preparing legal briefs, and rendering opinions on liability, damages, and value. Your expertise will be invaluable in driving success and upholding the high standards of our company.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Researching laws and preparing legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda to support our defense strategies
  • Rendering opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department
  • Preparing and handling pleadings, motions, and discovery, including depositions/examinations before trial and examinations under oath
  • Defending by trial or dispositive hearing, all matters assigned, as applicable
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams, including Claims, Underwriting, and other legal professionals to ensure seamless communication and effective case management
  • Traveling as required to attend trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings, and conferences
  • Documenting files in a clear, concise, and professional written manner to ensure effective communication with customers, clients, co-workers, and other employees

Essential Qualifications:

  • 2-6+ years of experience in related field litigation, with a focus on insurance defense and personal injury law
  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school
  • Admission to the Virginia Bar and licensure in good standing to practice law in Virginia
  • Ability to meet and maintain licensing requirements, including mandatory Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements
  • Strong organization, priority setting, and multi-tasking skills, with the ability to follow complex instructions and resolve conflicts
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively in person, via telephone, and in written correspondence/email

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Civil litigation experience, with a focus on insurance defense-related litigation
  • Experience handling personal injury cases, with a strong understanding of liability, damages, and value
  • Ability to learn and apply large amounts of technical and procedural information, with a strong attention to detail and analytical skills

Compensation, Perks, and Benefits

We offer a competitive salary range of $116,000.00 - $205,000.00 per year, depending on experience and qualifications. In addition to your salary, you will be eligible for a range of benefits, including:
